Fremont County voters approve bond proposal

Central Wyoming College recognizes that a thoughtful, committed group of citizens worked very hard to get the
CWC Health and Science Center bond initiative approved on Nov. 2.

Thanks to all the CWC students and community members from Lander, Riverton, Shoshoni, Hudson, Pavillion, Kinnear, Dubois and the Wind River Reservation who believed in the project and worked tirelessly promoting the benefits to Fremont County voters.

Facilities needs at CWC continue to be urgent

In 2008, Fremont County voters turned down a sales tax ballot issue to fund projects proposed by Central Wyoming College and county municipalities. Soaring enrollment, crowded facilities and the demand for training and economic development are making the needs at Central even more urgent.

The CWC Board decided in July 2010 to place a bond question on the November 2010 ballot. The proposed improvements to be funded with bond proceeds have been scaled back to reduce the impact on taxpayers. We listened carefully to our electorate following the failed sales tax measure in 2008. The proposed bond issue will be exclusively on the construction of the Health and Science Center. Voters have asked that we focus on our absolute highest priority when it comes to local funding, and to go out and find alternative funding for other projects. We have followed through on that request. Voter approval of the Health and Science Center will serve as a local match for seeking state matching funds to address space needs at the college, essentially doubling the county investment. That state match can be used for additional improvements to the existing Classroom Wing, Professional-Technical Center, as well as facility improvements to CWC’s Lander facilities.

College is currently exploring financing for Health and Science Center:
   35,000 square feet
   $11.5 million
Will house:
•   CWC’s popular nursing program
•   A virtual medical skills lab
•   Updated and right-sized science and geo-technical labs
•   Urgently needed instructional facilities
